Community

For those of you visiting the site from off island, welcome. While those of us who live here see many of the birds featured in The Landings Bird Book frequently, our resident photographers offer views that delight us.

We do not take our unique environment on the coast of Georgia for granted. Only 12 miles from historic Savannah, the approach to the island is a causeway across protected tidal salt marsh and a bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway.

Many of us moved here (from all over the U.S., internationally and from nearby Savannah) attracted by the island’s natural beauty and appreciative of the developer’s foresight in keeping so much of the landscape undisturbed. A canopy of live oaks, year-round hummingbirds, herons and egrets at lagoon edges, are often subjects of study by the birders, painters and photographers who live here.

Even our street names reflect an attachment to our surroundings. Take a tour of the community on our streets named just for birds. (We could do the same for streets named for trees, water, sailing and marine life!)

More than a thousand residents are involved in environmental stewardship, including the supporters and members of these organizations that helped to fund The Landings/Savannah Eagle Cam project, Skidaway Audubon, Ogeechee Audubon and CCA, Skidaway Island chapter.
